My sound device isn't working. I tried opening volume control but I get this message: "There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices go to control panel, click printers and other hardware and then click add hardware. This program will now close."

I went through the troubleshooting. I made sure everything was connected. I went to the Device Manager and there were no red X's or anything next to the names. However, when I go to control panel and sounds and audio devices, and click on the Volume tab it says there is no audio device, and I am not allowed to click anywhere. Similarly, i click on the audio and voice tabs and am not allowed to click anywhere.

I also tried updating the drivers, and doing some rollback driver. (i guess thats supposed to check the last audio device i used or something?) But it said everything was updated.

In the troubleshooting, it gave me this:

    Error ID: 0xCOOD11BA
    Condition ID: 0x00000000

I dont know if that will help any. I tried everything on the troubleshooting, except something concerning BIOS becasue I dont know what that is.

If you can please help me, it would be greatly appreciated. :)

Welcome to the BBS maejdiaz, glad to have you.

I have had this happen to me and I simply rebooted and the audio started working again. I was as if the bootup just forgot to include the audio device.

Hi maejdiaz, incorrect drivers could be installed although it seems to say there is no audio device at all.

In Device Manager what is listed under Sound, Video and Game Controllers?

What was the name of the drivers you tried to update?

    Hello maejdiaz,
I had a similar problem with my computer not recognizing my sound device. The BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System BTW. :) How I resolved the problem was when the machine first booted up before it shows the windows logo I pressed the delete key and I entered the BIOS. I went to the categorie Intregrated Peripherals and I made sure that my sound card was enabled.

My problem was very easy to fix and like you I tried to reinstall the drivers for my sound card but that didn't work and like you if I opened Sounds and Audio Devices it was all greyed out and I couldn't change anything.

So a simple check in the BIOS to ensure that your sound card is enabled could save you a lot of time trying to figure out why your sound isn't working. So make sure your sound device is enabled in the BIOS before you try anything else and let me know how it goes. :D

PS: Thanks for your help mattman with helping me out on my problem that I had with my computer not recognizing any external devices about a month ago. :D

Evan, I will support you on that one :D . The BIOS will be the first place to check.
Like your problem I might wonder how the setting would get changed, but maybe there was something like a power surge  .

maejdiaz, you should look at the blueprints/instructions for your machine and that is the manual/User Guide. It should tell you how to enter the BIOS settings, list the settings and how to navigate.

You will only need to identify the setting/s for Audio and check that they are enabled. You can ask back here if you are not sure, but changing audio settings will have no major drastic effects on the computer
    ...and,
by doing some checking in the BIOS you will gain valuable experience. You can "look around" there all you like, just be certain about any adjustment you make.

I wish both Mattman and maejdiaz all the best with sorting out this issue. :)

BTW mattman one thing that I didn't mention in my thread in the Windows XP forum was before my problem with my computer not recognizing any external devices happened, I put my Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD in the CD Drive and I booted from the CD. I was going to do a chkdsk /r in the recovery console because my computer wasn't acting the way it should have been and I wanted to fix a problem I was having with a strange error message I got at bootup.

Anyway I booted from the CD and the CD was loading the setup information but I interrupted it before it gave me the options to install Windows XP or to use the recovery console. After I interrupted the setup process my computer restarted and I logged on my username as I normally do but that was when the troulbe started with the external devices not being recognized.

Also since I interrupted the setup process on the CD I think that was what changed the setting in the BIOS. I defenitly know that it wasn't a power surge that caused the issue because my computer has never shutdown at random times.

So thanks again for feedback mattman and again I wish you all the best and I hope maejdiaz gets his problem sorted out. :) ;) :D
