In Device Manger, under System Devices, do you see an entry for a Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator?
    Look very carefully.

    Start button, Run, devmgmt.msc

    Expand the Sound devices section.

Identify by name the sound device. Mine for example in the listing is "SiS 7012 Audio Driver "

I would then go to the website for SiS in this example and download their newest driver for XP. This is very important if you permitted Windows Update to update your sound device driver. "Friends do not let friends update device drivers from Windows Update.

Unpack the driver to a new folder if it is compressed in any fashion.

    Start button, Run, devmgmt.msc

Right-click the sound device again and choose 'Update Driver'

You then work your way through the Wizard.

Do not let XP search for your driver. You want it to install the driver from a specified location, and use the "Have disk" option to browse to your new folder containing the driver.

Download to a new folder Everest - Free Home version: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Run the application and see if it identifies your sound device.

Also, provide the manufacturer, Make and Model number of your computer. It should be on a label on the back of the computer.
