As I posted Spybot runs on demand - i.e. only when you double click on the desktop icon unless it is set up to run at start up, which is not the default setting. The exception is TeaTimer which, if checked will run in the background, but can be turned off as indicated in my last post.
No to the Recycle bin idea - Spybot must be unstalled through Add/Remove Programs. Presumably the installation or set up files are on her hard drive so it can be installed again in a matter of minutes?
I think you are confusing firewalls with spyware scanners - Spybot is not a firewall - it is a scanner to detect adware/malware on the computer - a firewall prevents unauthorised access to the computer from the Internet, hackers, trojans and the like, but not viruses which are carried within data entering the computer either from the internet or from other sources - infected files on a floppy disk for example. Virus protection is provided for by antivirus software such as Norton, AVG, etc.

She has Zone Alarm installed and running two firewalls it not recommended.

    Indeed it is not.

The vast majority of this error is ONLY encountered when using an email client. It is a rare error message to be returned when surfing the net, that’s why we are trying to get additional information.

I hadn't heard from my friend until a few minutes ago, when she sent me an e-mail I'm quoting from here:

This survey came from AOL today. The following is what I wrote to them:

"After talking with AOL two times, my problem still is not fixed. I could not take the survey, because I cannot download anything from e-mails or get anything on WWW. The message I get is 'Action Canceled. Internet Explorer was unable to link to the Web page you requested. This page might be temperarily unavailable.' My case # is 153202228. My Host File is clean. Norton AntiVirus, Spybot and Ad-Aware run and are clear. I am unable to update Spybot and Ad-Aware. "

She continues: I was able to successfully download and install four updates to Norton AntiVirus. No change in getting updates from Ad-Aware or Sypbot. I have not called AOL since we talked. I think I'll wait until morning and see if I get any reply from my e-mail.

She's leaving to visit her daughter and a new grandchild in Oregon tomorrow. I'm not sure when I'll hear from her next.

Without a HijackThis log, I'm out of ideas too.

Usually the error message 'Action Canceled. Internet Explorer was unable to link to the Web page you requested. This page might be temperarily unavailable points to an altered "hosts" file, but as commented earlier in this thread, that seems to be fine.
