ok first off hi to all new to the forums, however not new to pc's and windows.

    ok on the the problem.

I'm building a small network here in brooklyn, ny a few of us on my block would like to Have lan parties but we all cant fit in one house.
now to get you up to speed with my network
i have a netgear wgr614 that everyone connects to.
my house has the most computers (4-5) this is where im having a problem.
i have my home network connected to the router thru my server (winxp pro sp2 box). however its connected wirelessly to the router and then shared thru a 5port gigabit switch, i have ICS running so it appoints ips to all the pc's on the switch.

the problem is my computers on the switch cannot see those connected to the router, they can only see those connected to the switch.
also no internet will be running.

    i'll make a diagram

(home pc 192.168.0.2) cant see wireless lan
    -(switch dg1005 dlink)
    (server pc ICS {192.168.0.1 wired} [192.168.1.3 wireless])
(router netgear wgr614 192.168.1.1) all wireless users can see eachother

my laptop can see the server but not the pc's behind it. yet i can use my home pc and log into the wireless router.
should i create a bridged connection? and share the ip from the router . will it
assign ips to all those on the switch?

or should i invest in the 5port ethernet bridge/switch from linksys

*** firewall is disabled for lan and wlan setup. and no encryption on ap. once all is setup i will close it off***

    Welcome to the forum.

If I am right you have a network like this:

    [home network]==[switch]==[XP server]~~[wireless router]~~[everyone else]

Simplest solution would be to run a cable between the wireless router and the switch. So you'll have:

    [home network]==[switch]==[wireless router]~~[everyone else]

Use DHCP on the router to assign IP addresses and turn off ICS.

Get those firewalls up ASAP. Especially if you have an internet connection into this network.

I think you may need to set up a static route on the XP PC acting as the server. You may also need static routes back.

If you go to one of the PCs on your network and at the command prompt enter:
    Code:
    tracert 192.168.1.3
    What do you get?

    Unbelievable.
    And a server too.
You might try to make your connection from the Router to the server wired as opposed to wireless.
Faster and you will have one less complication to eliminate.
It might be usefull to install a networing setup / maintenance utility called Network Magic

    download it at : http://www.networkmagic.com/download/thankyou.php?dldone=1

    www.networkmagic.com

people here must think that I am a shill for this firm.
I am only running the after 30 days non premium version as I have no files to share across the network or printers.
It will find and set up your network.
I have been pleaseantly surpised on two recent setups.
In one as detailed in a previous post it set up a network on 2 xp computers that I could not seem to set up and as well installed a network printer even with no drivers on computer number 2 as well as allowing for additional printers seen on computer number one.
On the second setup the computer was attached to a hotel wide wi fi / wired network. The setup went through the whole network listing and preparing a map of all the computers on the network even though some were on distant nodes.
    Hope this helps .
Network Magic works with both wired and wireless networks and combos.
It has some additional networking utilities included as well.
It can work alone or be installed on remote computers as well especially if you want to share folders.

see the problem lies with the fact that the router itself is across the street at my friends house, so we can share files with out having to bring my external everywhere, and we can play counterstrike on lan. anyhow i resolved my issue i awaiing a ethernet to wireless bridge then connect the to my switch. and im all set. 3-4 days and all my probles will go away.

    (pc1) (xbox360)
    \ /
    (Router)
    I
    (wireless usb - server
    Lan)
    I
    (5port giga bit switch)
    / I \
    (pc1) (pc2) (xbox360)

thats my curreent setup, im gonna remove the wireless usb and move the server from infront of the switch to behind it. and connect thru a wireless bridge as an extention of my network not a subnetwork that cant see the main network
