Hi, I have been using XP on a new Gateway now for about five months. The boot up time is short and that's great but the shut down time seems to be getting longer all the time. Is tghere something I can do to get it to shut down faster? Thanks..

Where does it seem to hang?

Have you tried closing all open programs first (including any in systray)? If that helps, then do them one at a time to locate the guilty party.

If none of this helps, post back since there are some other ways to track shutdown behavior but they are lots more work and no need if you can cure it by locating the guilty party(ies).

It does appear to be doing something right after giving me the closing sound (probably closing the programs in the systray as you suggested). Closing each running program in the systray first manually would probably take more time than waiting for the machine to do it. All other programs that I have opened are always closed before shutdown.
I guess I'll just put up with it, just a minor annoyance I was hoping might be easily fixed. Thanks again.

Not suggesting you shut them all down before a shutdown/reboot every time. Just enough to locate the one that is causing problems. If the time is getting longer, something ain't right and easier to deal with it now rather than later when the problem is major.

    I have same problem

I am having the same problem. And it is getting slower and slower. From the "computer is shutting down" message it was taking 40 seconds.... it is now well over a minute.
