SLooooow LPT port

Anybody ever tinkered with scanners on a parallel port ..

Scanner is a Visioneer 3100 series on a Compaq En series deskpro running windows 98se ....problem is, scanning at anything over 100dpi causes the scanner to scan about an inch then pause for several seconds then another inch .....etc etc ....scanning an 8 1/2 by 11 sheet of paper can take up to a minute.....same scanner on another machine with same drivers scans the same piece of paper in about 12-15 seconds with no pauses at 300dpi....
Twice now, when tinkering with resource settings I got it to work properly, but as soon as I reboot it reverts to it's old tricks...anybody offer a clue?

What are the computer's specs? How much RAM and what programs are running, especially in the background? Do you do disk maintenance on it?
