    1) Boot
    2) Sleep
    3) press a key and reume OK
    4) sleep
    5) press a key, computer starts up - BLACK Screen - dead keyboard
    6) hard reboot.
HP Pavillion A1600N 3 gig memory
Vista Home premium, SP1, drivers are current, MS dual core hotfix applied,
Bios is newer than the one on the HP support site. By the way my BIOS is from Phoenix Technologies, they will upgrade for $30, think I should try them?
Eliminated all startup stuff (via MSCONFIG) did not help, Allow ... to wake the computer checked,
I've tried to wade thru the MS stuff - it is pretty deep!, tried to back off SP1 but that failed.
Since the system takes so long to start I really want to sleep/resume.
I'm pretty old but I'll do a dance imitation for some help.

Hi, Welcome to the Windows BBS.
You can try and play around with the Power Options in Control Panel or like I have done disabled sleep altogether and put setting to "Never" and have only the Monitor go off "Balanced Setting "

    Thanks for your time.
I am doing what you suggested but I do not like it.
As an aside I got a fan warning yesterday about overheating. I have been running for some time with the cover off the box. I do not know if this is a spurious warning. I plan to replace the fan myself.
    Again thanks for your input.

Check the power settings and other suggestions (like turn off the screensaver) here:

Look in Device Manager that there are no problems listed. I would look for updated chipset drivers, but HP don't offer them. If you try sourcing them from the chipset manufacturer, they will probably refer you back to HP.

Did you upgrade from Windows XP (Media Center Edition)? One option I would consider is backing up the data, reimaging or loading the HP version (of XP MCE) then upgrading to Vista, install the vista drivers, then Service Pack 1.

I wouldn't use any BIOS upgrade unless it was made specifically for the model of motherboard, and then, it may even depend on the revision version. If you install the wrong BIOS and the motherboard stops working, well...
You have upgraded the BIOS and it hasn't appeared to work, so I would expect the problem to be elsewhere (and if you are using a BIOS that may not be the correct one, I would go back to the HP version).

If you read all the provisos about upgrading at HP, they offer little or no support. In the past the only way you could get the correct drivers for an OS upgrade was to purchase the disks from them.

If you are going to try reinstalling the Vista system, before you do, try going to Device Manager -> System Devices and uninstall any with the term ACPI. Reboot and test the system.

    Thanks for your reply.
The ACPI changes did not seem to help.
Over the weekend I'll try your other suggestions.
    Thanks again for your time.
