Up to yesterday I could put my computer into sleep mode where the monitor would power down and my hard drive also shut down, but all of a sudden for no reason when I select sleep (either from keyboard or vista) only the monitor powers down but the drive no longer power down.

I am using Vista Premium 32-bit.

Sleep mode as returned (not sure why) but it appears to wake up after a few minutes with no intervention from me, any ideas?

Sleep mode requires that everything is saved to memory. Look at what programs you have open, as more are opened (or they are "larger ") it will be harder for system to save them to memory. I generally find, if that happens, I look at what is open and trim it/them down and try again.

Something may have taken more space than it should in the memory, you may then need to close down the running applications and restart them. An application may have a "memory leak ", so watch for if it may happen when a particular program is running.

The system will require a reboot occasionally. I did one yesterday after a few weeks and could tell it needed it by the amount of activity when Windows restarted (it needed to flush the "buffer" systems, possibly Prefetch from what I read).

I am not certain, but if the system is required to carry out scheduled tasks, it may come back out of Sleep mode. You can check in Task Scheduler (example, I rescheduled making System Restore points, I thought making one a day was excessive). It may also be set to keep trying to run tasks even if they are unsuccessful.

I expect rebooting would fix it.
