My computer freezes during shutdown pretty reliably. It usually freezes during the "Windows is shutting down..." screen. I have to press and hold the power button to force it to turn off.

I would appreciate some help with this.

    Thanks ahead of time,
    Chad

See if the Event Viewer gives you any help.

This can be caused by a "stuck" driver or some program that fails to terminate. Checking for updates on your major drivers is a good first step.

Are there any programs that run usually that you have a hard time stopping when you are not shutting down? Try closing the programs you have running in the tray to see whether any of those are hard to close.

    Home or Pro version?

New problem or had it from the git go?

    System specs?

Any event log messages that look related?

What shutdown options - both BIOS and control panel~power options?

This is somewhat new, maybe the past month or two (I've had the comp a year).

    It's Windows XP Home

1.6 Ghz, 512 Memory, 30 Gig hard drive, CD-RW, Floppy, 17 in. monitor blah blah.

How do I view event log messages?

The power scheme is "Always On" and I can't find my shutdown options. :(

Hope this helps figure it out

The Event Viewer in Home is, I think< in Control Panel, Admin Tools.

Look for red errors or yellow warnings that may pertain to your problem.

You may find this log easier to read if you right-click each section and clear the log. At least then you will know that any new problems you have will have log entries among the most recent.
