I'm posting this problem on belhalf of friend who is experiencing the following problem:

My Windows 98 is now coming to the point where it displays the message 'Windows 98 is shutting down' but then it sits there forever and doesn't complete shutting down. If I just power-off then I am faced with the blue panels counting and check all directories for lost files when I start it again. Takes about 10 minutes to check all 1988 files.

Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated--Marion McCaleb

Also a good place tp start would be to make sure all programs are shut down before shutting down Windows.

    Especially those in the Systray.

From my own experience they can cause the problems.

One of the most troublesome I have found so far is AOL. It does not seem to want to shutdown properly. And I have had it hangup Windows shutdown.

Here's an update on my friend's shut down problem's---any further suggestions?---thanks, Marion McCaleb

Marion - would you please tell your BBS group that altho their suggestions were beyond me, I found a workaround by setting W98 (SE) to restart, and then powering down as it did.

Now, I hope they can suggest why I am experiencing the following: When my 'connection to internet' display appears, it says,[a] dialing, then connected to remote computer, then [c] confirming user name and password, ....THEN, it pauses for an instant (long enough for the Yahoo Chat popup to appear) and then copies the same statement again; confirming user name and password....but this time it takes up to 4-5 minutes to complete the process and let me in. The SBC phone support said to reinstall OS, but that didn't help. I think it is something the server is doing to slow down traffic demand, but don't know what to do about it. This has been happening for the last couple months. Any suggestions?

    Thanks, Bob

One idea. Be it wild or otherwise.

A conflict between the two. See if you can stop Yahoo Chat from loading ( or attempting to load ) untill the connection is complete.

Here's the latest from my friend Bob----Marion
    ________________________________________________________________

I uninstalled Yahoo Messenger [chat] but the effect still appears. Also tried connecting without the 'automatic' connection box being checked. It seemed the momentary pause between first and second copies of 'verifying user name and password' was slightly longer,..like 1.0 second instead of 1/4 second.
Is there any way to contact the server, I wonder.
