I had my XP Home ungraded with SP2 and then recently had to re-install XP on a formatted drive.

I use Firefox and Thunderbird now, instead of IE and OE. Use Zonealarm Free for my firewall.

Is there any reason for me to use the SP2 CD I just got and any reason to avoid it?

My two cents...SP2 is more of an operating system overhaul than an update. Given the scope of what it does, preparing the system before the installation is not only a good idea, it's pretty much a requirement if you want to avoid problems.

Microsoft recommends scanning for and eliminating spyware, scanning for and eliminating viruses (if you have any reason to suspect the system's infected) and then be sure to disable your antivirus software right before you begin the SP2 installation.

I've followed Microsoft's recommendations on the half-dozen or so systems I've installed SP2 on and none have encountered any problems either during or after the installation.
