Problem: When i create a shortcut to my DVD/RW drive, the system cannot find it and starts a search. Plus, the shortcut shows as "CD Drive" vs a DVD drive

Computer Management > Disk Management shows as:
    1 Zip Drive (I:) - Disk 0
1 HD - Disk 1 -partitioned as (C:), (E:), (F:), (G:), and an ACRONIS partition. All show as Healthy.
    CD-ROM 0 - DVD (D:)
    CD-ROM 1 - CD-ROM (H:)
I also have an external HD (USB) that will show as J: when plugged in.

Any ideas on how to get the shortcut fixed so it finds the DVD drive when clicked?

Is there a way to re-assign (change) drive letters without having to go through a re-install with all drives except HD unplugged?

    thanks,

    I'll get this straight yet!
    WinXP Home w/SP1
When i got the system, it had only the HD, DVD and a floppy "A ".
When i re-installed winxp, i removed the cables (including power) to both
the Zip and the CD-RW drives. Only after installation was completed did i
re hook up the Zip and CD-RW.

    thanks,

In Disk Management right click on a drive > change drive letter.
Sure does, just tried it. Easy enough to rename, but try this ....

Create new shortcut on desktop with this as the target C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /e,Q: replace Q: with the drive letter of your DVD drive. With a disk in opens up WE with contents of disk showing. Without a disk = Please insert a disk message.

The new shortcut worked just fine, thanks.

About changing the drive assignments - What i want to do is:
    1. Keep "C" as is. Primary
    2. Change "E" to "D ", partition (switching DVD with a partition).
    3. Change "F" to "E" , partition
    4. Change "G" to "F ", partition
    (HD and Partitions = C, D, E, F).

    5. Change the DVD to "G "
    6. Change the CD-RW to "H "
    7. Change the ZIP to "I" (this is Done).
    8. Change the external HD to "J" (this is Done).

Do i have to use a whole new range of letters, say, "M' through "T"
and then re-assign them to what i really want?

Will this mess up partition magic? or anything else?

    thanks for the feedback,

Allow me to offer one small suggestion... When you rename your CD and DVD drives, use 'X' and 'Y' or 'Y' and 'Z'. This keeps them out of the way for any future drive letter changes or if you add another hard drive. HTH

No,not necessarily, but Disk Management will not allow you to assign a drive letter that is already in use, You may have to temporarily assign a drive letter other than the one you want and then change it later.
Not AFAIK - I did the same recently with no ill effects. PM sees the new drive letters.

I agree with Mr B - good idea to assign X,Y to the optical drives, but you can always do that before you add another hard drive.

    Worked great!!!

My drives (all of them) are now in sequence and i have a new backup
recovery of the new designations (Acronis).

Just had to re-do some shortcut properties to point to the new drives.

    thanks,

    PeteC RE:shortcut problem/drive question

PeteC, thanks for the pointers. The HD/Partitions working good now.

Isn't there a way to just have the DVD and CD-RW drives use a
shortcut without going through explorer? Re-named of course?

    thanks bunches,

Click "My Computer" and then right click on the drive you want to change, using the right side of the window. Click "Create Shortcut ". Put it on your desktop and then you can move it to wherever it suits you.

The shortcut I posted in post #3 does the job - if you want to see the contents of the drive you need Explorer - or am I missing the point here?

    Joanna,
that's when the search starts because it cannot find it.

    PeteC,
Was just curious about why its necessary to go through explorer when the
C drive and partitions dont need to.

I think i found the answer. In shortcut properties, in "Target" just put the
driveletter:/ and in the start-in line put the %windir%.
Seems to work like any other shortcut then (so far). If no CD or DVD, i get
the msg to insert one. It a cd/DVD is there, it just opens.

    thanks,

I think the command re. Explorer is there, but just not shown - Windows just 'knows' :)

    Glad you are happy anyway!
