Minor question: is it normal that two PCs on a wireless network in XP home cannot share access to the "Program Files" and "Windows" folders? I get a message saying these folders cannot be shared.

I would think so - clearly you cannot share the OS and Program Files are closely tied in with the Windows folder with many components of individual programs loaded to Windows\System, etc.

Why would you want to share them anyway? - sharing is basically for data.

If you really need to share those two, you might try it from safe mode. XP-home does some very strange "security" things and some tasks just can't be done except from safe mode.

But I agree with PeteC that those aren't normally folders you'd want to share.

I can't be sure about XP-home and on a workgroup (don't have that OS to test) but you may find that Windows is already shared as ADMIN$. The $ at the end makes it a hidden share like the one for C$ so it won't show up but is there. Easy enough to test.

From PC2 when logged on with an account that is also on PC1 and has admin rights on PC1,
    start~run~\\PC1\Admin$ and see what happens.

Okay, I admit it. There's no valid reason for wanting to share anything in the Progam Files or Windows folders.

I just hate being told what I cannot do.

It's a holdover from the 60s. My apologies.

No apology needed. I do the exact same thing but in my case at home, I chose to connect to the C$ share on the other XP PC so I got soup to nuts. :D
