I am running Outlook on My Windows 2kProfessional. I have all the folders shared. When I try to access Outlook on the network with my Win98, I can bring up the program but not the data.
I can't seem to find where the data is stored and how to bring it up when I'm accessing it with my win98 machine. Can anyone help? It would be much appreciated.

In Outlook on your Windows 2000 workstation go to Tools then Services. Double click on the entry called Personal Folders and look at the file path and name. The file will end with a PST extension. This file contains all your folders, e-mail messages, contacts, etc... within Outlook. The exception would be if you were on a corporate network connecting to an Exchange Server but it doesn't sound like this applies. For the Outlook on your Windows 98 machine, simply point to the PST file that is on your Windows 2000 machine.

I have a new problem. The file is accessible only when the administrator is logged on, because it is located in Documents and Settings. Is there a way that I can access it when a local user with administrator privleges is logged on?

I'm new at networking and I'm struggling with all the details.

Move it to a folder that everyone has access to. If you have to, create a new folder. Keep in mind that when you open Outlook on the Win2K machine you'll have to redirect Outlook to the new path or you could end up with a whole new file. :D

You could do one of two things:

    1) Modify the directory/file permissions on Documents and Settings to allow you local user(s) access.

    - or -

    2) Move the PST file to a more central location, like for example, C:\ or C:\Winnt. Before you move this file, on the computer that Outlook is already setup on, remove Personal Folders from Tools -> Services, move the PST file, then finally create the Personal Folders on both PC's pointing to the new location of the PST file.

I don't seem to have Tools "Services"

Instead, I have personal folders in the file menu under
    Folders, then "advanced" tab.

Under tools, my Outlook doesn't contain a folder "services.

    I am using Office 2000.

Next, when I try to change the location of the folder I'm not allowed to.

Why don't I have the folder "services" under Tools?

I have looked for the folder when the heading is Personal Folders, today.

ps documents and settings is marked "shared" but I can't access it on my win 98 machine. My win 98 machine can't locate the server and so I may not be getting the access I need.

I've had this problem. I can't get past the password on Win 98 without creating an NT network. But I can't understand how to create a domain on Win 2000 professional. There is no box that says "use this computer as a server." So I think I may not be accessing my Win 2000 machine properly.

    Hoping you can help me.

You may have Services under the Tools menu. In Office 2000, they started what Microsoft calls "Personalized Menus ". See if there is a little arrow at the bottom of the menu when you click Tools and click it. You should see your menu expand showing items that you have not used yet.

As far as accessing the file share from your Windows 98 computer, make sure you are not setting either of your computers to use a Domain. It sounds like all you have is these two computers so you want what is called a "workgroup ". You cannot create a "domain" without Windows NT or 2000 Server (or Advanced Server, Datacenter, etc...). Windows 2000 Professional cannot be a true "server" in a domain structure. Right click on My Computer on your Windows 2000 PC and go to Properties. On the Network Identification tab click the Properties button and change the "Member of" button to Workgroup and to keep it simple call it Workgroup. Now on your Windows 98 computer right-click on Network Neighborhood and on the middle tab, type Workgroup in the middle box. On the far right tab in Network Neighborhood, make sure the Logon to the domain box is NOT checked.

I know I'm breezing through this but I don't want to throw too much detail at you in case I confuse the issue.

I started out doing just that. However ... when I boot up the Win98 computer, I get a box that asks for a password ... and nothing I enter makes it advance. That is when I call it a workgroup.

And nowhere in tools in my Outlook is there a folder called "Services." I clicked on the down arrow previously.

I have called a network guy who is coming on Monday at $100 per hour. I hope I can find the answer first, so I don't have to pay. But I've spent too much time on this. It's discouraging.

But thanks for all your thoughts on this.

I believe Services only shows up in the Tools menu if you are set up for MS Exchange. What you probably have instead is Accounts.

You should be able to change the path there.

Can't change the path in accounts. The only place the path shows is in the File Menu, under Folders. I can't figure out where to change the path.

Anyway, I think my real problem is in the network I've set up.

Maybe if I keep asking someone will know the answer.

    thanks
