    Hello,

    I'm using Netscape 7.1.
I would like to know how I can share the netscape profiles between different users.
For example, I'm logged in windows as Paul, then I create a new profile "MyProfile" in netscape.
When I log as another user, Karl, and then I start Netscape, the profile lisr is empty.
How can I get "MyProfile" profile during both Paul and Karl logging

    thanks

    Welcome to the Forum, ricobelo!

    Hi ricobelo,

It just dawned on me that you must be talking about the Windows logon, and not Netscape. I'm not really clear on what you are trying to accomplish. Could you be more specific?

I had given an answer, but now I don't believe it was appropriate for your question, so have removed that reply.

    Thanks!

    Ramona :D

    Hi ricobelo

I not sure if this is the correct solution (for XP only)... and hopefully "Newt" our resident network/ XP guru will chime in.
You would set up a Netscape profile called example "AllUserNetscape" in
"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data.......slt ". Now the same profile is accessible to yourself, Paul and Karl when logged on. For your mail, if you want to keep them separate... each of you would require a different email address. You would setup 3 different email accounts in the same Netscape profile accessed by different passwords unique to the email server.
The first question I have to Ramona --- Will Netscape allow a profile placed in the above path? Would it require a "hack" for Netscape to look to this path?
Request to "Newt" --- Could you please convert my "maybe" to reality if Netscape allows this path for profile... primarily the "legitimacy" to use the "ALL User" path in providing a "singular profile" for multiply users when logged on. Possible restrictions .. (?) putting above folder on network share could get Netscape profile corrupted... since I doubt if the program has proper access/locks to manage the files properly in a realtime multiuser environment.

    One suggestion to ricobelo....
If the above is possible, I would really suggest you set it up using Mozilla 1.6 .....
Netscape is a discontinued browser based on Mozilla, which is under constant improvement. Your call, but I know what Ramona's choice would be.

    Okay, I am not Ramona.
    Yes.
Netscape Profile Manager allows you to specify profile location, you can save it in virtually any folder.

Yes and no. If you want to creat a new profile, it won't require any hack, just specify it in Profile Manager when you create a new one; but if you want to change a current profile's location, you might need to apply some "hacks ".

    Hi Anthony,
    ;) :D

I tried sharing a single Profile, Netscape 7.1. This is how I did it:
    1. Created a new Profile named "ProfileB "
    2. Removed newly created *.slt folder from "ProfileB" Profile Name folder
    3. Copied default "ProfileA" *.slt folder to newly created "ProfileB" Profile Name folder
    4. Deleted registry.dat file from the Mozilla folder
    5. Started newly created "ProfileB" from Desktop shortcut with -p ProfileB command line
    6. Profile Mgr. prompted for new Profile
    7. Entered "ProfileB "
    8. Netscape started A-OK with "ProfileB "

Repeated steps 5. - 8. for default "ProfileA" Profile

Both Profiles show the same Profile data information, including Mail & NG's. The catch would be Mail, and the workaround would be to use separate Mail Accounts for "ProfileA" and "ProfileB ".

Note: this works on Windows 98SE, and I leave Windows XP expertise to Dennis L, and Antony...

    We'll thank you Antony...
Since your very good in playing dual roles, how about a triple play.
So, if I have a Netscape profile at " "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data.......slt " on my XP, whenever a valid user logs off and a different "logon on" user occurs, it will use the "same netscape" profile ". This would keep the singular profile in perfect sync between multiply users.

    Dennis,

I've found that what I did in Windows 98SE doesn't really sync the users. Address Book entries added are not reflected in both, nor changes in Mail & Newsgroups, i.e., sent mail, etc.

For Windows 98, the best bet is either create two separate Profiles, or both users share one Profile/one Profile name.

    Dennis,

I am about to report something similar to Ramona did.
I just created a new Netscape profile located in All Users. Then I logged out current WinXP profile. In different WinXP profile, Netscape 7.1 won't recognise that profile in All Users, instead it tried to convert my Communicator profile to create a new profile for NS 7.1.

Then I decided to create a new Netscape 7.1 profile into same folder as I previously created. Netscape 7.1 simply rewrites the new profile I created.
(Test method, I added a bookmark when I first created the new Netscape 7.1 profile.)

I guess if I want to share a Netscape profile along different WindowsXP profiles, I need to do following steps...

(my suggested workaround, not yet fully tested; but hope it will work.)
    • In first WinXP account, Create a second profile (say, tempProfile) in a common location where both WinXP accounts can access to.
    • Log into second WinXP account, create a profile called tempProfile (same name) in the same location as previously created.
    • Log back to first WinXP account, copy your primary Netscape profile to the tempProfile folder. Use the same structure as the tempPofile. Remember to copy pref.js to change the refection of new path, especially the salted directory names.

Thank you Antony for your time and expertise.
---------- Please keep us posted. ----------
Do you feel with further "tweaking" the shared Netscape profile can be managed as a "singular and synchronized folder" between multiple XP Log On accounts?
