I seem to have a similar problem to harligrl.
I have a couple of buttons that have lost their lettering. Different buttons were affected after last two start ups. The first time it was the 'Start' button and one other I can't remember- both on the bottom of the screen.
Today it is the 'Word' button and the 'getting results book' button (whatever that is?) on the top of the computer.
I did the file check as recommended and it came up with the 'setupx.dll'
    'C.Windows/system'.
I am a computer simpleton! What can I do?
The buttons affected are a mixture of colours now.
    I have 98SE.

    Henry.

    Hi Henry,
Maybe the same problem, so big cleanup, I think!!
If you have not run it, do Disk Cleanup (see Start -> Help -> Index tab -> type "Disk ").
    Oh...the rest...see here:
    http://www.helpwithwindows.com/techfiles/clean_hd.html
I think this is where I started here :)

Disk Cleanup will not remove all the temporary files.

The other day I found a system with more than 20,000 files in the Temp folder (and 100 folders in the Temp folder that I just deleted). A photographic program was making multiple links for each photo. These are the type of problems that will overload Windows.

Then do a Scandisk, then a Defragmentation.

    Hi Matt,
I have done the lot.Disc clean up/scan: Defragment: Removed Temporary and internet files.Checked for unwanted programmes.
I also ran a full computer scan with Kaspersky.
I shut down and restarted but the problem/virus is still there.

It sounds like you're doing the right thing with cleanup. I would just say not to forget antispyware and there are online antivirus checks. Look at the "stickies" at the beginning of the Security forum.

On my system there is a backup of that file in the location C:\Windows\Helpdesk\SFC. It would just be a matter of copying the backup file and pasting it into the Windows\System folder. You will be asked if you want to overwrite the original file, say Yes.
The other way is to use System File Checker to extract the original file from the cabinet files on the Windows CD. Put "extract" into Start -> Help.

This sounds like it may be graphics problems. Look in Control Panel -> Display -> Settings tab. There is a heading Display: and in the drop-down box underneath it will tell you the model of the monitor on the model of the Display Adapter. If it says "unknown" or "standard" you need to install or reinstall the graphics card drivers.
You should be able to select a colour setting of High Colour (16 bit), if not, again you need to install the graphics drivers.

Let us know what you find. If it is a graphics problem, do you know the model numbers of things like the graphics card or motherboard?

    Hi Matt,
I am just a beginner on computers so your soundadvice went over my head.
I did check the colour though and it seems OK set at High Colour 16 bit.
One other thing- there are two buttons affected. 'Microsoft word' and
'Getting results Book'. I do not remember this button being there before?
    I could be wrong!

    Henry.

Henry, I am trying to get a mental picture. You do mean icons on the desktop?

"Getting Results Book" sounds like information about MS Word/Office.

If it is icons on the desktop it may be because Active Desktop is enabled. Active Desktop is buggy and I suggest that you don't use it. If you have chosen a personal image/picture as the desktop background, this will automatically enable Active Desktop (View as Web Page). Right-click on the desktop and see if Active Desktop is checked. If you still wanted to use a personal picture as the background, you could change the image to a "bitmap" format.

It may be best for you to begin by looking in Start -> Help. Use the index to read about icons and Active Desktop.
If you want to delete and remake the icons see Icons -> adding to the desktop. There is also information about the colours of icons.

It may be a fault in the Office Shortcut Bar. I don't use it, I go to Start -> Programs and select the Office program there. You should be able to remove it by putting the MS Office (or Word) disk in the CD drive and finding it in the list of add or remove features. You can find information about it in the Help menu of the Word program.

Let us know if any of these seem to be the cause. Work with the Help menus, that is about the only way to get past the "beginner" stage.
