I just got an email from my web host provider (generic, not just to me), advertising a new service--some type of malware app that would scan the files that I have on their servers for malware.

I have a couple of thoughts. Feel free to comment/correct, because I'd like to do the right thing.

First of all, isn't this their responsibility? I mean, isn't a web hosting service doing this anyways, just to make sure that malware doesn't infect their entire system? I'm wondering if this isn't a way to get people to pay them to do their job.... or more accurately, pay them to do what we're already paying them to do.

Even if this is something that they can't be expected to monitor---do I really need it? I have a site that has perhaps a few hundred kbs of text/html, probably less of some graphics (back arrows and the like), and the rest, just pdf files for students to view/download. There isn't a database anywhere of customers personal identification and CC #s, or even usernames and passwords.

From what I can see, the only malware concern I have is simply the incredibly unlikely scenario of some jerk infecting one of my pdf files with a trojan, which would then be downloaded. I'm still thinking that this could be detected by antimalware apps that my webhost is using already.

    Comments or corrections, please.

As I said, it was obviously a mass email---they might only have intended it for people who run sites that have databases and/or login info.

Hi Paul. I also agree with SpywareDr. It sounds like nothing you need to worry about. Just take proper security precautions with your website which you are already doing and you should be fine.

That implies that they are the ones that are using this, I believe. I just logged into the control panel and didn't see any icon to click on that said "Clam AV ", so I don't suppose they're expecting me to use it myself.

I was under the impression that Christianity was anchored on truth.

Proverbs 12:22 - Lying lips are abomination ...
Exodus 20:16 - You shall not bear false witness ...

    I'm just saying. ;)
