I've got a weird problem: when I do a "search for files" on my local drives for the file "jetsuite.ini," it comes up empty. And yet I know for a fact that "jetsuite.ini" (for my HP laserjet 3100 printer) is in the windows directory.

So why is my search function not finding it?

    Hi dkline

Any chance you've not enabled the hidden system files to show? Alternately, did you try a search without the ".ini" extension?

Under "More Advanced Options" in Search, be sure you have enabled search in system folders and for hidden files and folders.

XP search is both hobbled and lame. It doesn't search system files or hidden files by default and requires you to set it up for those by using the advanced button. Then it reverts back when you finish, like you really don't want that all the time.

I have all but given up on it in favor of PowerDesk which is totally free. It has lots of other good features besides its neat search capabilities.

    How totally lame!

Why hobble the search function like that? I am beginning to discover a number of things I don't like about XP, and still waiting to find things I really like about it.

Oh well...thanks for the tips, guys. And I'll check out powerdesk. (Does this program replace Windows Explorer, by the way?)

No, it doesn't intrusively replace anything. Use of it is purely elective and it stands alone without warping your present system files.

    Trust me, you'll like it.

Zephyr - thanks for that link. Just downloaded and installed it. Looks great and will for sure be a nice explorer substitute.
