I don't think the previous postings regarding this subject are the same as my problem.

I am using Windows XP Pro.

When I log on as Administrator, the search engines in IE don't work.

Everything is fine when accessing the System as User ???

Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Do you mean the 'feature' you get when you click on the search feature of IE?

    Does Google work?

What exactly happens when you try to search with an admin logon?

Which of the search options do you have active? Search Assistant, Search Companion, Single Search Engine?

I type a query in Google but when I click on "Search ", nothing happens.

The same situation when I use AltaVista.

    This may help someone.

I tried using a different browser and everything worked fine, so I must have an incorrect setting in IE, and I doubt whether I will live long enough to find this on my own, so if someone can help, I certainly would apprciate it.

You could start by deleting all TIF (Temp. Internet Files).

    Thank you for the reply.

I had actually already done that and it made no difference.

    Hi Arie:

    Thank you for the reply.

I had already tried both of these and neither worked.

The problem is not anything serious (I hope) so I don't think I will bother with it any more.

    Thanks for the replies.

You've been hit with a virus. Check your hosts file, if it contains anything other than
    # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
    #
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
    #
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    #
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    #
    # For example:
    #
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

    127.0.0.1 localhost

you shold delete it, then do a thorough virus scan with an up to date definition file. You could also go to

Many Thanks to all for the replies.

As I said in my last posting, "The problem is not anything serious (I hope) so I don't think I will bother with it any more. "

The reason I have not replied before is that I had some other problems which entailed re-installing my antivirus program, but the trouble is, when I did this, I lost my connection to the "Net ".

Guess I am just going to have to invest in some new equipment, or some different software.
