ScanDisk/Defrag Problem

    I am unable to run ScanDisk or Defrag (Win98SE) due to constant interference from an unidentified background process. Have tried to run in Safe Mode w/same results. Any ideas on how to (1) identify the process, and (2) how to shut it down will be much appreciated.

    Try running msconfig to see what's loaded at startup. You really only need 2 items to run windows.......Explorer and Systray, I leave my firewall active also.
    Turn off the screensaver and temporarily disable virus scanners.
