Hi all - I am a retired computer programmer, DBA, systems analyst at the U. of Calif., but as some of you may know, we programmers are not always that savvy about many things, so I am enlisting the help of anyone who may have had the same problem using the Backup Utility in Windows XP SP3. Here's the scoop:

Trying to use XP's Backup utility with Seagate external drive as target and get error "Backup Utility cannot connect to the Removable Storage Device. This service is req'd for use of tape and other backup devices. Please...start the Removable Storage service using the System Services function of the Management Console ". <br />But then the Backup Wizard comes up anyway so I choose "C:\" to backup and the E:\ Seagate as place to hold backup, then get error report "Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy: Catastrophic failure. Aborting backup, etc." What's going on?

I thought maybe the Seagate drive wasn't be recognized, but I am able to copy and read files to/from that drive (assigned to E:\ ) okay, so...?

I tried opening the Management Console but I really don't know how to use it.

    TIA,

    Sandy
