RPC server unavailable

    I wasn't sure where to post this, but I'm having trouble installing things I've downloaded. I keep getting the message that the installation engine could not be launched and the RPC server is unavailable. I've searched other posts and done what they suggested but I still get the same message. Any suggestions?

    What is your computer setup (stand alone / networked)? OS? Do you have adminstrator privileges?

    my computer is networked through the university I work for. I'm running windows XP and yes I have administrator privileges.

    Control Panel->Admin Tools->Services->Remote Procedure Call (RPC) make sure it is started.
