router???ascend setup

hi i don't know so much about router.??? is it a firewall..
how can i configure and setting my ascend router setup with dsl connection plzz help how to configure and setup it and make secure my connection by using router.. explain in details..

A Router is simply a device that sends (routes) network packets from one network to another.

If you have a group of PCs using a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 then all IP addresses that are identical in the first three octets (set of numbers in the IP address) and connected to the same set of wires are on the same network and can 'see' each other without help.

So in this case, 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.137 would be on the same network and would not need or use a router.

However, 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.0.137 would be on different networks and could not talk directly. They would need a device that 'knew' where both networks were located and could relay network packets from one to the other. The PCs locate their local router only if the router's IP address is entered as the 'default gateway' address on the PC.

You probably have a combination device - a router with other things added to make it more functional.

There are lots of different Ascend models with very different features so you'll need to post the exact one you have or else your question will be impossible to answer properly.

i think it's not routher it's swithc model no is down but last time my friend send you are using router is adsl modem call router.. or switch..??

k i m using winxp professional server with adsl connection cellpipe modem,,,,, now i want to know about my switch or modem ... how to cofigure it then no body can access my network because i m in problem of these kinds of activities....
lan ip adress is 192.168.0.1 and mask 255.255.255.0 and for client same same just change ip address...
so tell me how to use switch or firewall
and for monitoring and other server i m using which is connect 192.168.0.2 and ascend software is installed here
so can u help how to cofigure and figure out ...switch or router.
