It's not considered polite or useful in hijacking threads here, start a new one and give details of the (I'm assuming) hard drive rather than the external case.

    Hi wildfire,

Yes, it is not polite to hijack somebody else's thread. It may not be very bad in this case because there has not been any activity in the thread for several weeks and the original questioner has not replied. It gets confusing when the thread is "active" and different people are discussing different problems. I can't see that the thread will get badly "hijacked" at this stage (if the other moderators think differently, I won't disagree with them though).

korozia, PeteC has covered just about everything you can try without opening the drive's case. Have you tried connecting it to another computer? If you can open the drive's case carefully, you should be able to disconnect and reconnect the cables to the HDD inside.

If there seems no hope of accessing the data, you can open the case, take the HDD out and get a replacement External Enclosure to put the drive into.

A "mobile" external drive will be a 2.5" type (not 3.5 ") and you will need to investigate if it is IDE or SATA.
Although...you will want to hope that the HDD is not damaged itself, and the data irretrievable.

I am wary of drives that do not have their own power supply.

As wildfire was saying, if you wish to ask a question, we strongly suggest you start your own thread (go to the main forum [Hardware] and click the New Thread button at the top or bottom left side).

    Matt

korozia - Welcome to the Board :)

Forums can be confusing at first, but you will soon get into the swing of things - for your info the User Guide may be useful.

I have moved your posts to a new thread.

The omens are not good, but more information would be useful. Can you expand a little on your problem and describe the sounds made when you connect the drive - mechanical clicking sounds?
