    Hi All,

I got some issues with standby - about every third "resume ", I get this problem. When resuming, things "appear" normal, but VERY slow. If I CTL-ALT-DEL, instead of task manager, I get this series of messages:

The application failed to initialize properly (0xC0000017). Click on OK to terminate application. (Now I click OK and try task manager again)

    C:\Windows\system32\Taskmgr.exe
The paging file is too small for this application to complete. (Now I click OK and try task manager again)

    C:\Windows\system32\Taskmgr.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

Here, I give up trying and press the power button to reboot. I have 1 gig of RAM AND a paging file, so obviously that's not a problem. Any ideas?

    TIA!

    Russ

    Hi Russ,

The only reference I could find searching MS is this old pre-SP1 patch:

    Resuming From Standby Update

This update addresses the "Devices May Not Power Up Properly When Resuming From Standby (Q311542)" issue in Windows XP, and is discussed in Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) Article Q311542. Download now to resolve an issue preventing your computer from resuming from standby.

For more information about this issue, read KB Article Q311542.

    System Requirements

This update applies to Windows XP.

    How to use

Restart your computer to complete the installation.

    How to uninstall
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
Select Windows XP Hotfix (Pre-SP1) [See Q311542 for more information], and then click Change/Remove to uninstall.

    Regards - Charles

Circumstances may have changed and MS has corrected some of the many problems inherent with stand-by, but I disabled the feature. It presented more problems than any convenience vs. energy savings expected from that feature.

Among other problems, it occasionally messed up the monitor settings by dropping down a resolution, and intermittently failed to run some programs at wake-up.

You may want to consider going into hibernation mode. The difference is favorable as files are saved on the hard drive (power failure assurance), PC is turned off, and when returning to operation mode the memory is restored to the desktop immediately. In a sense you are backing up your open files while a work in progress is being performed.

Thanks! Forgot to mention, I do have SP1, but all my other updates were lost after a "reload ".

I do have another piece of the puzzle - after the power-off reboot, I almost always get one "blue screen" that I *think* says something about "IRQL "... I'll edit this post next time it happens.
