I won a computer from where I work. It came totally stripped down. I installed Windows98SE on it, installed a modem, and so on, and so on. Everything on the computer seems to work fine, but The highest my resolution will go 640x480 at 16 color. I've been in device manager and had it try to find a better driver. I've done all of the windows updates - still no luck. Can someone give me an idea of what exactly I'm doing wrong.

    Any and all help appreciated,
    falksdw

You would think Win98se would have auto-detected your adapter during installation. You could try reloading your video drivers. You could also remove the adapter from Device Manager and have Win98 try and auto-detect it again. You will need to have the drivers on hand as it will ask for them.

What video card do you have installed? If your not sure you can download, install, and run the free "Home" version of Everest (old Aida32). It should tell what manufacturer your adpater is. You can then download win98se drivers from their web page.

If this video card is an AGP card, you will need to install the motherboard drivers first.

    falksdw ...

I've been down this road before, with computers that were "won" at work. They're usually computers that have no market value because they've been replaced by (much) newer models, so they're raffled off to employees, just to get rid of them. Is that how you got yours? You didn't say what make it was, but I'm guessing it's a Compaq.

The fact that your computer is maxed at 640x480, 16 colors, suggests that you may have a VGA monitor, or that the graphics functions are integrated into the motherboard.

The first thing I'd suggest is trying a different monitor ... one that you know is capable of higher resolutions and more colors.

Good luck, and please post back to let us know how you make out.
