It would help if you stated what system and BIOS you have so that someone with the same system could help you, but generally speaking, there is a prompt at startup for what key to press to enter "Setup" ( BIOS, not Windows). This is often "Delete ", "F8 ", "F1 ", or something like that.
Once in the BIOS setup, navigate with your keyboard to a place that actually says something about default settings. Set it and click whatever it tells you to click to save and exit.

    Hope this wasn't too vague.

If this is not enough info, post more details and someone may be able to tell you, possibly with a jumper that will reset it.

No need to apologize. It is hard sometimes to tell exactly what details are needed.
In this case, a make/model is what I was looking for if my other post didn't give you enough of a boost.

I wasn't able to find a board with those numbers. Have you been able to access the BIOS?
It appears that the Gigabyte BIOS defaults are on the first screen and all you need to do is choose them. They do not recommend using performance defaults until your system is stabilized.
What was the problem that made you believe the defaults needed to be set in the first place? Have you changed any BIOS settings?

Hi,I had a shutdown problem due to a cd burning programme and after that was sorted out I was advised,by a technician,to reset my BIOS ro defaults.
You may have been unable to find that number as I am in Australia and some of our specs are different on parts and hardware:p
    regards tric

OK. I certainly don't want to contradict the tech, but is everything working OK now, including the burning program(me)?
If all is well otherwise, changing any BIOS settings may not actually be a good idea.
The tech may have been following the advice given on the usual error screen about disabling video and BIOS shadowing. This rarely solves any problems (though worth a try, of course).
My advice, if you have no specific problem with your machine at present, is to leave well enough alone.

Do you see any message at the bottom of your screen on startup that tells you what key to press to enter the BIOS setup?

Hi Abraxas, yes F8 is the key to use to enter, not sure about going there tho as everything seems ok.
May be a good idea to leave well enough alone, what do you think?

I definitely think that leaving it alone would be a good idea if all is working well. XP can override many BIOS settings if it needs to, and the defaults may not even be the best settings for you.
Techs are not always right. Sometimes the best way to fix something is by trial and error, and when the tech is not directly in front of the computer, they need to have you try things for them.
If all is working, just leave it. You can always push that F8 key if you have a major problem and set it to the default then.

    Award v4.51 PG

Hit the DEL key on startup to enter BIOS setup.

On that blue screen there will be an option to: "LOAD BIOS DEFAULTS "
