I have a new computer which came without a game port. My relatively new joystick has no place to go and midi cable with the same plug has not place to plug in. I just spend a good sum for a midi cable with USB at the other end but I would like to know if there is a simple serial to USB adapter that I can use for the joystick.

    Yes!

They are mad but are a bit pricey.

Do a search on Google for "serial to usb converter" and you'll come up with quite a few hits. The least expensive one I found was about $75 (US).

You have a couple of other potential options that may be considerably better. Get the documentation for your motherboard and you may find that there are pinouts on the board to connect a cabled daughter card with a midi port. If yes, you have a less than $10 solution. Second option is to buy a decent audio card that has a midi port. SB Live 5.1 can be had for $26-30.

    ;)

I dont feel comfortable messing with the motherboard. If I go the sound card route, I could take the sound card from my previous computer if there is an open PCI slot but would I have any problem with having a sound card and also the built in onboard sound facility
