    Windows 2000.
    Every so often (30 minutes or so of constant browsing) I will lose my IP address as seen by running ipconfig from the command line, meaning I can longer browse. using the renew switch has no affect, as it either just hangs up, or says it was refused. Using release first sometimes works, but as I said, it won't renew. This only happens on my Win2000 machine, my Win98 works fine. Going under properties and setting my IP and default gateway to what it shows when all is working causes it to not be able to surf as well, so it's back on auto again. Rebooting always renews my IP correctly and I can browse again. What to do?

    What kind of connection do you have? xDSL? Cable? Are you on a network. Do you have a router? Using ICS? Please provide some details.

    I am on a Local Area Network provided by the University I am working for. As far as the routers or ICS, I don't know. The ethernet card is built into the MB on this computer - are they any more prone to this type of problem?

    I have found that if I unplug my ethernet cable, while I am still able to get on the network, and plug it right back in, I lose my IP as well. Somehow I am just not renewing at all until reboot.

    try

    stopping and starting the dchp client.

    goto start

    settings -> control panel

    double click administrative tools

    double click services icon {not component services just services}

    look in the list on the left for dhcp client.

    single click dhcp client so that it is highlighted.

    right mouse click the highlighted line. select from the popup menu "Restart "

    close everything back to desktop. See if that helps your problem.

    Also check the event viewer to see if there are any errors occuring at the time the renewal happens. Sounds like your lease is expiring and your are having problems renewing. Check with the IT staff and see if they can extend dhcp ip lease times or reserve and IP for you...

    I do have my own IP. But if I hard code it in, I can't logon! Strange. I tried renewing the DHCP as you said, I did it while I still had a working connection. As soon as I did it, I had the same problem. For whatever reason, it just will not renew.

    What is the duration of your normal address lease?

    Does a check of your event log show anything significant at about the time you have the problem?

    Have you gotten the NIC checked out? The cabling?

    All the cabling on site is mine, and it is good. Duration of lease is two hours, but I was losing it more often than that. Thanks for everybody's help, but I believe that I have tracked the culprit down. Everybody is going to hate me, but it is ZoneAlarm. I don't understand that, really, because I have two computers both running ZAP, and only this one has the problem with identical configurations of ZAP. I have been running the other computer for a year and a half with no renewal problems at all from ZAP, which is why I didn't consider it. I can only guess that the difference is in the OS, Win2K must do something differently. Sorry about that everybody. :rolleyes: *waits for rebukes.
