In running a dupfinder, I find that I have multiple (over 100) "snapshot" entries in my registry_Machine_Software. (Each 5266368 bytes). These appear to be taken several times daily and extend back for 2 months. Can I safely remove most of the outdated entries. If so, by regedit?

Hi Stormbull. Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Most likely those snapshots are system restore points that are created by windows XP. If you want to delete them then use disk cleanup NOT regedit.

Click Start< All Programs< Accessories< System Tools< Disk Cleanup. After disk celanup finishes calculating how much space you will be able to free up click the more options tab and under where it says system Restore click the Clean up button. This will delete all but your most recent restore point. Now click the disk cleanup tab again and select all the checkboxes except for compress old files. When thats done click ok and let disk cleanup finish deleting all the unneccessary files on your computer.

This is unwise and limits the use of System Restore in the immediate future. Far better to let them be, although the number can be reduced by ......

Control Panel > System > System Restore - Settings and move the slider to the left to adjust the hard drive space allocated to System Restore. In doing so older restore points will be elimated, but current ones remain. Default space for System Restore is 12% which on an unpartitioned 500Gb drive is a massive 60 Gb - I live quite happily with a 600Mb allocation on the 50Gb OS partition.

I am not convinced that these snapshots have anything to do with System Restore and would ask the question ....

Are you running Spybot with the Tea Timer function enabled?

Would you mind posting a registry string to one of these 'snapshots' ?
