I once had a Cannon 8000f scanner installed on my WinXP Pro SP2 computer but now it's gone and I have a Cannon Lide 80.
The old 8000f is not listed in Device Manager but it is still there in several programs (like Word) where i can select it when I want to insert a picture from the scanner. I never select it, but occasionally, when I think I'm ok it defaults back to the 8000f scanner and I get error messages and I have to go through the routine of selecting the Lide 80 yet again.
How can I remove the pesky 8000f scanner from the list and stop it from making itself the default scanner?
    Any ideas much appreciated guys.

How about in Word>Insert>picture>From Scanner and Camera and select the source?

You might search for the 8000f in your registry by manual or by registry cleaner and delete the offending entries.

As Bmoore1129 suggests use something like RegSeeker - don't worry about it being Beta, it's been that way for years. Search for 8000f and delete the strings (a backup is made of deleted items in case of trouble)

I got Regseeker. I searched for 8000f and found quite a few entries. I removed them all. The 8000f scanner is gone but in its place is an entry called "empty" or "empty 8.1" depends what program you load as to what entry you see. Any ideas what "empty" might be?

At least "empty" is now the second entry alphabetically so maybe i'll be ok from now on.

By the way there was no software to uninstall in Add/remove and the scanner was nowhere to be found in the control panel.

    Fingers crossed eh?

    Many thanks guys.

Probably the odd reference left in the Registry - these may be difficult to pin down :)

This means that there may still be a reference in the Registry. And/or the program itself is looking for something that is not there.

And/or you may need to remove that reference from the program itself.

If ANY PART of the old Directory for the Cannon 8000f exists RegSeeger may not remove all of the entries.

What I have found the better thing to do when removing stuff like this. In some case I found it NEEDED to be done.

    #1-Uninstall the software.
#2-Run RegSeeker and make notes about what FOLDER the program is/was in.
#3-Search the HD for that folder. And 8 times out of 10 it will be there and still contain some files.

If some of the files are there RegSeeker may not see then as invalid and not make references to them.

Now I have also found that after finding the folder I could still not delete some files. This indicates that they are still being used by the something.

Did you by any chance have anything for the 8000f loading at startup ? If so that will cause problems for cleanup. ( marks the files being INUSE and will not delete.

What I have also had better luck with.

I make sure that nothing for the program or hardware is being loaded at startup or used in any other way. Then by using the properties of the Shortcut(s) find the folder and DELETE everything. Then run RegSeeker.

Seems to be ( so far for me ) an easier way to cleanup.
