Quite often when conected to the internet I get a warning about an error in Remote Procedure Call from NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM and a timer counting down from 60, at zero windows is shut down and my computer is re-started. There is never a request to send an error report on this either. This can happen as often as 7 times in a row before I get more than 60 seconds on line. I have never had this problem before and had just reinstalled win XP profesional to a new hard drive after a catastrophic failure with the old one, I had no backups and everything is a new install, I have been having this problem since the first time I tried to connect to my ISP so don't think it could be a virus or a worm

Almost certainly a virus and almost certainly the Blaster worm.

You can easily get it if you do a fresh install of XP without all the security patches and then get on the internet to download the patches (or just get on the internet at all). Frequently we see PCs that become infected within 20-30 seconds of getting on the net.

You don't mention what antivirus program you run. Do you have one loaded and up to date? If not, you really need one.

For now, make sure you have all the security patches loaded and then go Here for a little more detail and for a link to a free removal tool.

Also a good idea after you get somewhat cleaned up to do an online virus scan to find and clean any other unwanted visitors you might have. Quicklinks from my signature has links to several good (and free) online scanner sites.

    thanks

well I think I beat that 20-30 second mark by 15-20 seconds if it is the worm, that dialog came up before the ISP even aknowledged I was logged in. I got the update and removal tool figuring it wouldn't hurt while waiting on a reply, so will give that a shot.
Of course thit wouldn't be necessary if microsoft hadn't taken a month (so far) on the SP1 update CD I ordered.

That may be a new world's record. If so, I suspect you'd rather not be the record holder.

Seriously though - if your ISP has an infection source somewhere, it could easily nail you that quickly. You might want to download the various security patches and burn them to CD then do a complete format/reinstall and before you get near the internet, apply the patches. None of them require SP1.

If it were me with a PC that newly formatted, that's certainly what I'd do. In fact, that's what I recently did when I knew I was going to format and reinstall XP and was too lazy to slipstream a CD with SP1 and the patches. I had that stuff on CD and applied it before hooking up to my router/switch to venture onto the net.

    thanks again, but....

    thanks again, but....
how do I get all those updates to cd, have never seen any dialog box on where I want to save them so I have no idea how to find them. As often as I change stuff and reinstall that would really come in handy
    BTW
I can't get the patch to install so I can remove the worm, I get:
setup can not verify the integrity of update.inf. make sure the cryptographic service is running on this computer

You are in a bit of a Catch 22 situation - with the Blaster Worm you can't stay on the Internet long enough to download anything and if you can't download the patches you can't get protection against the Blaster Worm :(

You can download updates to your hard disk from here ....

    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp

Snag is you need to know which ones you require as you will not be told. That site just contains a list of updates although it appears to list only those which are not installed - on my m/c at least. - and in your situation you may need to use another PC.

The MS update CD is a valuable tool in this respect.

Check Cryptographic Services is running by right clicking My Computer > Manage > Services and Applications > Services. Should be on Automatic

Microsoft is the biggest scam in the history of man! (in my opinion)
