When I connect to a remote computer using Remote desktop with the printer option in local resources checked, then try to add a printer...

First i get that it cant find one. When I click next and look at the dropdown
    listbox; among the selections are:
    Tss01:eek:asysoffice-pc . prn2
    Tss02:eek:asysoffice-pc . prn3
    Tss03:eek:asysoffice-pc . prn4
    Tss04:eek:asysoffice-pc . prn5

    (or something like that)

My computer is called oasysoffice-pc so I assume these are the printers
in my computers printer and faxes.

my question is: How do I know which to select or is it trial and error.
What I have is a MS XPS document writer, print to file, default for my deskjet, and Send to OneNote 2007. The XPS and OneNote i have no idea what those are... I want, of course to use the deskjet.

    Any suggestions ?

If you want to make the printer on your computer available on the network, go to Control Panel -> Printers, right-click on the printer and select Sharing. You will need to give it a network name, like Desktjet1 (on oasysoffice-PC).

I haven't used Remote Desktop for adding a network printer, but it may get "muddled up ". I would just try running the Add Printer wizard from the other computer and get it to locate the deskjet eg.," \\oasysoffice-PC\Deskjet1 ".

Through trial and error (only 2 tries) I got a perfect test page to print although I had to use an alternate driver for now (my printer is an hp6540)
used hp 680c or 690c which should work for my purposes since most of the reports i would test are text reports. the TS001 colon oasysoffice-pc . prn5
which was the last of 4 shown worked after trying prn2 first.

Even though my printer here is a network printer i used the local option in add printers on the remote desktop.

I have another problem with this printer. When it is connected to the vista computer I cannot print to it on my winME computer. That is, it tries to go to it (the printer make noise like it's going to print) then I get an error message.
I dont remember what it says other than there was an error trying to print to the printer. It prints fine when printing from the Vista computer and now works on remote desktop connection. It worked fine when I had XP home - that is i could print from either computer. I'll try making the printer a network printer on winme and see if i can print from vista when connected to winme.

    Here is the printer's webpage:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...us&dlc=en&submit.y=5&submit.x=8&lang=en&cc=us

It probably won't be able to use the Win ME drivers to install it, that's why you have needed to resort to using the 690C drivers. Using those may have scrambled the drivers on the Win ME computer [Edit: the Vista computer using the 690C drivers may be locking the Win ME computer].

As I said, using Remote Desktop may muddle things. You are using two different sets of drivers because of the DOS/NTFS operating systems.

If you can physically access the "remote" computer, I would run the printer installation from there. If possible, carry the printer to the Vista computer, according to the instructions, if you plug it in with a USB cable, it will install the drivers using Plug and Play (install it as a local printer). Because the drivers are installed, you should then not have any problems installing it over the network.

I like the "simple" way:D. Your method seems to be the hard way to me.

If you physically connect the printer to the remote computer, it will install the drivers and then should have no problem installing it as a network printer.

For initial setup, I would avoid using Remote Desktop (unless you understood exactly what was installing where).

    Thanks for the reply.

Perhaps I didnt word my problem correctly

Actually i have the correct drivers installed on vista and me. It's the remote computer that I used the 890c or whatever and it is printing ok from the remote desktop remote computer. Both the ME and the Vista print fine when
connected to the respective computers and use the port on that computer.(USB port) From Vista, it wont 'attach' the WinME network printer (local to the WinME computer but shared). It finds the WinME computer and the printer but says it cant add it and when the printer is attached to Vista (local to vista but shared) and printing from ME the printer makes noise like it's going to print but then i get an error.

My network has Vista and ME.
