To get rid of the virtual disk service error, i reinstalled win7 and it did fix
the problem about not getting into disk management and control panel.

The reinstall took my old programs, files, settings and saved them to a windows.old folder.
Is there a way to get these programs back (from windows.old to the current windows folder? And put the program files, /program files(x86) folders into the current matching folders?

Why I'm asking - the reinstall went a lot faster (than the first) and only
about half of the display settings are present. For example, can't find the
advanced display settings (font, etc) and when i reinstalled the printer
no icons appeared on the desktop. There are more but you get the idea....

    thanks,
    savagcl

If I were you I would back up any user data from the old installation, and then do a clean install. Make sure to choose "Custom" and format the hard drive before installing Windows 7.

    One more follow-on question -

If I backup the windows.old to an external drive, do the custom install,
would it then be possible to copy the files/programs from the external
drive to the C:\Program Files and Program Files(X86) folder and maybe
have some of them work? If this won't work, why do a backup since
    I'll be starting from scratch?

I realize these would not be in the registry and all the updated drivers
would still have to be installed.

    thanks again,
    savagcl

Programs would need to be installed instead of just copied. They may not work without installation.
