I have a 2 user computer. When one of the users selects the log on icon an error message pops up, "unable to update the registry ". The other user never receives this error message. How can I repair/remove?

    Hello hds4730,

While I have seen and experienced similar error on log off, I'm not familiar with that type of error when logging on xp. Can you quote the error, using exact words, in entirety rather than paraphrasing?

Are you saying the user can't logon?

Any event logged in the event viewer that may help pin this down?

    Hello again hds4730,

    Got your pm...
This type of error is usually a "user rights" issue. It occurs when an under privileged or limited account user does not have enough account permission to use, modify, install or access something.

    That "as yet unknown" something:
    >may be running in the limited users account at startup,
    >may be something installed by admin or poweruser, whom rather than installing it with install option of "for this user only" choose the option to "install it for All users ". Note* "Some not all" software will install with this choice as an option,
    >May be software itself which is restricted to administrator privileged accounts only. AutoCad, AutoDeskTop are examples of this type of software,
    >may be something the limited user tried to modify, customize or install that, due to policy restriction, was/is unable to fully complete because it would have required access rights to certain Hkeys in the registry that require Administrator/Power/All User "Full Rights" to use.
    >various other reasons but you should have the idea by now.

^Referring to the above, and that being said, is this user account limited (<-less than Administrator or PowerUser)?

Does anything I've previously listed as possible reasons ring a bell?
The solution may vary depending upon the root cause or application.

    ----Possible solutions-------
    >Administrator may have to temporarily elevate limited user account, at least for one logon session, to allow that "as yet unknown" application task to complete. (after determining this is a safe or desirable thing to allow.)

    >Tshoot startup by "process of elimination" and remove that startup or modify policy right to allow the user rights to run it,
This is my bet as this problem occurs at logon. Try this:
In an attempt to find the application that's causing this:
    *Click on Startbutton>Runline and
    *type MSCONFIG.
*From the startup tab, uncheck applications one at a time, reboot after each elimination, until you find the culprit.
This is to be done from within the account having the problem.

    >If you have absolutely no idea what's going on, as previously suggested "Events logged in the Event Viewer" may help.
