On numerous occasions, I have searched my registry for "controlset" with Lavasoft's RegHance v2.1.

    The numerous results include:

    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet
    • HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-...\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet (edited by me for this message)
    • HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\System\CurrentControlSet

Every time I have searched my registry over the last several months, ControlSet001 key apparently does not exist. This is bugging me enough now that I'm finally starting a thread about it. :)

Question 1: Does anybody have any idea why my registry apparently does not have a ControlSet001 key or how I should proceed with investigating further?

Question 2: Exactly when is Windows supposed to create a new ControlSet001 (which I think is used first by Windows when booting to its last known good configuration)?

I have searched these forums for controlset001 and came up with 8 threads. Only one of those threads appears to be remotely related to my issue but does not answer my questions above.

Thanks, Dennis! That article and your configuration info gives me a good start! :)

I'm betting Windows XP doesn't mind "missing" ControlSet001 and will perform properly if I ever have to choose the Last Known Good Configuration during boot-up. We'll see if/when I ever have to use it.

I'll read the information you linked more closely after I get some other issues cleared up. :)

    Thanks again!
