I have Netscape 7.1 installed on Sony Vaio with Xp. My husband, when logged on to his profile has three problems that i do not have when logged on to mine.

    1) There is a Netscape Network Registration popup window that appears every time the browser is closed. He does not wish to register and has clicked cancel, and closed the window every way possible, but it always come back.

    2) I have reset his home page in the preference many times, but it always defaults to a Netscape welcome page.

    3) The Netscape Quickstart dialog box appears every time he closes the browser even though we have repeatedly clicked "do not show me this notice. "

As I said, none of these problem appear when I am logged on to my ID.

    Welcome to the Forum, papiosam!

    Hi papiosam,

These are the Preference settings to disable, and/or change, the features which are annoying your husband:

    1. With Netscape closed:
Do a "Find" (Start | Find | Files or Folders)
    Type in: activation.dll
    When the file is found:
    Highlight the file
    Right click the file
    Select: Rename
    Rename the file Xactivation.dll
This will disable the Registration Popup

    2. When you try setting the Home Page in Preferences, have you tried opening that page, and then selecting:
    "Use Current Page "

Try selecting "Blank Page" ensuring the Location Bar has no entry, and see if this setting is retained. Netscape 7.1 is quite buggy about retaining settings, and you sometimes need to enable/disable the setting several times to get it to work. If the Blank Page setting is retained. Then open the page wanted for the Home Page, then select: "Use Current Page ".

    3. To disable QuickLaunch:
    Edit | Preferences | Advanced
    Remove the tick beside:
Keep Netscape 7.1 in memory to improve startup performance
    This should disable QuickLaunch.

If you continue to have problems, please let us know.

    I spoke too soon

I should have known... As I bragged about fixing the other problems, here are two more!

The Security Warning alert when you leave an encrypted page. He unchecks the "Alert me whenever I submit to not encrypted page" and every time it come back. Is there another file that needs an X?

Also today, he's unable to order on line. There a message "You cannot connect to the www.(whatever site) because SSL is disabled. "

Hasn't been intentionally disabled by anyone. How do we re-enable?

    Hi papiosam,

Is that not "Murphy's Law "?

O.K., here's what I would do on the Security Alerts. Disable them all. Then if there are any that are needed enable them one at a time.

    In the same Preference area:
    Edit | Preferences | Privacy & Security
are all three "SSL Protocol Versions" enabled?

Let us know if this helps,

    Ramona :D

    papiosam,

If the above doesn't allow you to access the secure site, then create a USER.JS File then add this script to the file:

    user_pref( "network.security.ports.banned.override ", "1080,2080,3080 ");

How Can I Access Certain High Ports
Netscape does not allow access to certain high ports. To deactivate this, add the following line to your user.js. This also works in all Mozilla Releases.

If you need help with the user.js post back. Could be that it won't be necessary after apply the above settings.

All of the Security Alerts were unchecked when I went in. I checked one at a time and then tried the security entry with no success.

I'm having trouble following the user.js instructions. When it says to save to C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt

    I can get to c:\Documents and Settings\

but after that, I click on all my user names and don't find application data in any of them.

    Sorry to be so dense.

    Hi papiosam,

Those Security Alerts would have no effect on accessing the Secure Site, it only alerts you when you enter or exit a secure site. The SSL settings are the configurations that should be set.

To see your Profiles folder on Windows XP:
NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
    To see hidden files:
    1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab
    3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders

Once you have done this, you will then be able to save the user.js file to:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt

I should also add that some secure sights do not support Netscape. Be sure to read their FAQs for information as to which browsers will work on their site .

    HTH,

    Ramona :D
