    Hi everyone

I just put my hard disk into another computer because my other one wasn't working anymore, this made me reinstall windows xp on that hard disk to make it work with the new computer. Anyway, the windows xp installation was already on the hard disk, so I had to install the new installation in a new folder (I made it WNDWSXP). This all worked, but it figures that this is a totally new installation and no registers are transfered. I was wondering how I could transfer my register back to this new installation (so from WINDOWS to WNDWSXP). Anyone know if this is possible?

    Thanks

You'll have to reinstall all the programs like Office etc...There are tens of thousands of entries in the registry and most are still referencing C:\windows

That is the whole point of tranferring the drive. You should have just kept one installation instead of making 2. Remove the new installation and do a repair of the original one. Then you'll still be able to keep your stuff the way it was before.

I tried to restore my other windows xp, I pressed R at the windows setup screen and got a black screen with white letters, here you could select your installation you would like to fix... I typed 1 and it asked me for the Administrator password, I just pressed enter as there was no password installed and got C:\WINDOWS\>. I don't know what to do then, anyone can help?

I have seen a lot of those guides, sadly enough I can't see any repair option when I chhose to install Windows XP instead of pressing R. It just asks on what partition I want it installed, and if I choose C:/ it says that there is another installation of Windows Xp in /WINDOWS/. Can anyone help me? I haven't found anything about this on the net.

Setup certainly should give you a repair option after you press F8 to agree to the license. You may need to do a small repair on the old OS before you can do a large one.

Start from your CD again and press "R" to get to the Recovery Console. Once at the prompt after entering your password (if any), run chkdsk /p on your drives. It may be a good idea to specify the drive letters, just in case. So if C: is your system drive:
    chkdsk C: /p

    Then, type:
fixboot /? and fixmbr /? to see some information on those commands.

    First, try using fixboot.

Then, reboot to see if setup recognizes your installation and allows a repair. If not, go back and try fixmbr.

There may be some problem with the boot configuration that is preventing setup from recognizing your present installation. If you just run setup like you were installing from scratch, it should see the present XP installation and give you the option to repair it.

Thanks for your help Abraxas, I did the fixboot thing and nothing changed, but can't figure out how to use the fixmbr thing, even with the help on it. Do you know how?
