I get the above-titled dialog when I attempt to run regedit. The dialog box itself states:" The application failed to initialize properly(0xc0000005). Click on ok to terminate the application ". Ok is the only option.
This is a HP pavillion ze4800 laptop, running WinXp. The cpu is a mobile AMD XP2800, 194 megs. Bought it used. In nice physical shape.

An unrelated annoyance: I'm not a fast typist(one finger per hand). Still, this laptop drops random letters while I type. Never the same letter twice, so it's not a defective key here or there. I probably type 15 to 20 wpm, and lok at the keyboard while I type. When I look u, I see missing leters. If I slow myself down, the problem seems to go away. That's ridiculous, to force myself to type at 5 wpm. 15 to 20 is bad enough. Any ideas? Thanks.

    Run System File Checker ....

Start > Run > sfc /scannow - note the space and have your XP CD handy. SFC will run and exit without any closing dialogue. To see which files, if any, have been replaced look in Event Viewer.

If you don't have the CD look for the i386 folder on your hard drive and point SFC to it as detailed here or look here

BTW - laptop keyboards are not great - I type one finger and have a few problems and tend to plug in a standard keyboard when possible.

Thanks Pete. It worked! I didn't get the request for the XP CD or the I386 directory, but the regedit runs fine now. Thanks.

Good news :) I guess your OS was preinstalled with a pointer to the i386 folder. Thanks for posting back.
