Regarding Best Internet Security.

I tried to post this in the thread I started in January but it wouldn't let me coz it was more than 60 days old.

I just wanted to update.....I was wanting to change from Norton IS to another Internet Security and asked what was best,during the discussion it was mentioned that I'd have a helluva job uninstalling Norton.At the time I decided top just stick with Norton (better the devil you know ).I did update Norton to the 2006 IS.I then got a problem with Norton....every other day it wanted to be activated or I wouldn't be able to use it,even though IT WAS activated.I got p***** off with this and finally decided to change.

So....I changed to McAfee IS,I did not have any trouble at all uninstalling Norton,it just went off and McAfee went on and everything (touch wood) is working OK.

Maybe it was because it was a newer version of Norton,I don't know,but I just wanted to allay anyone's fears who are wanting to uninstall their Norton to try something else.

 

Just as a matter of interest....Has anyone else had that problem recently with Norton Internet Security keeping asking for it to be activated when it already has been activated?

 

I can guarantee you that Norton did not just "go off" with a simple uninstall. If you do a search of your registry you'll discover dozens and dozens of entries for Norton/Symantec. It has dug its tentacles deeply into your system and the only way to rid yourself of it is to go to their site and follow their instruction. Now you say you have McAfee.... geeze... you've gone from the frying pan to the fire in my estimation. Oh well... I wish you all the best but I'm afraid you've really gotten yourself into a deeper hole than you were previously. If memory serves, several of us advised AVG or EZ Anti-virus both of which are free (at least for the year with EZ).

I've done a fresh install of XP home and I'm using AVG and Zone Alarm.

Does this setup get your approval?

 

Uh huh. But I wasn't trying to be a jerk or know-it-all. I was just trying to pass on what I've learned (through many sad and long and frustrating hours) of messing with Norton and McAfee. They charge you through the nose and they dig deeply into your registry. Anyway... I'm sure you'll be happy with what you have now. Really. All the best.

 

Thanks James....I never thought for a second you were trying to be a know-it-all And I know what you mean about long frustrating hours There always seems to be something that doesn't work as it should after a reinstall.....*touch wood* So far my new install is going OK.
