Redundant app icons

Is there any way to remove the icons of long since uninstalled applications from the notification area display customization window? The list drags on and on, sometimes repeating the same program even three times and some of those I've uninstalled from my system quite a while ago. Yet the icons for those applications remain there still. Can anything be done to remove them?
