Is it possible to recover bad sectors without reformatting the hard disk? I have 4 bad sectors because my 16 year-old son turned off our UPS while our computer is starting to boot up from stand-by.

    I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate.

You could try booting from the Vista DVD, follow the prompts for language, etc, choosing Repair > Command Prompt, type chkdsk /r and press Enter.

if a chkdsk doesn't work, and you need that data back I'd contact Drive Savers. They have helped many of my customers in the past recover data.
This is one good reason to always have a backup. Since Vista can automatically schedule backups, I'd highly recommend using the feature. Data recovery can be costly.
