I have a URL that wants to start a secure shell (SSH) to a host (ssh://somehost.com). However, I get an error from Windows that says:

Cannot find 'shell://somehost.com'. Make sure the path or internet address is correct.

I know the address is correct so the obvious conclusion is that the path is wrong. I have no idea how to set/check the path as SSH is not one of the configurable helper programs. 'Shell' is in the same directory (windows/system32) as 'telnet' and IE finds 'telnet' OK (telnet://somehost.com). So the PATH variable is correct, if it uses that.

How do I set IE to find the correct executable? TIA.

I think in this case, path refers to the address rather than a pointer to some location on your PC. If the address were on your LAN, it would not be considered Internet but would be a UNC path.

I'm not sure I follow but I am on the LAN. I know the URL is correct because it works fine on a Mac.

Sorry - maybe more clear if I just say that in this case, 'path' has nothing at all to do with the PATH variable on your PC.

Do you have the ssh client installed on the PC?

I think that was my original question. It is clear form the error message that IE recognizes 'ssh' and changes it to 'shell'. The 'shell' dll is indeed installed, howver, when I use ssh manually I use PuTTY.
