I have windows 98 se and for the last day or so I have begun to have problems with my computers initial boot, and rebooting whilst the machine is in use.

With the boot for some reason the processor does not want to boot. I have norton utilities and done a hardware check via that and it picked up no issues. I also have nortons firewall and anti virus.

I checked the power profile and that is not enabled....I dont know what to do next.

Can anyone help....I have never had any problems such as this with my machine before.

    Hello Seraphyn,

It may help if you could be a bit more specific in your description of the symptoms. What do you mean by "the processor does not want to boot ", in other words: Is this failure occurring right from the get-go "button on push ", during bios checks or somewhere in the win98 loading process and if during windows loading process how far do you get, any errors?

Be as descriptive as you can be. For instance:
*what you did before it happens,
*when it happens (is this random or reproducible),
    *what happens when it happens
*any errors? If so, quote with details (button is on error popup) if possible.
*have you added, moved or removed any devices recently such as sound, graphic or network related devices?

*Quick-Check: make sure you do not have a bad or loose power plug connection on the back of your computer or in the "powerplug extension surge protector thingy ". This has been the cause of many a random reboot. When the computer is jiggled, kicked or moved the computer magically reboots.

    ======
Early prognosis (without any details on your particular problem):
History has shown this to be hardware based. Either bad board devices, ram, cmos battery, powersupply, heat/fan.

Windows-Help.net's searchable "past posts" have a few archived experiences from many who have suffered your same problem.

Well I found what the problem was. I had a trojan, how it got in is beyond me.

What was happening is that from the get go, as soon as I booted, the computer would not want to run, I would not get my start up beeps.. I would shut down and restart and get the first beep but not the second beep to initilize the processor. Then shut down again and it would boot and freeze during the load to windows. Reboot again and I would get my system running. During normal operations on the system it would freeze and refuse to reboot or boot..

I scanned my computer and found three files in my temp infected with a trojan, I quanrantined them and tried to clean them without sucess, so now they are deleted. My machine is still not running 100% so I am now preparing to scan again to make make sure I got rid of the trojan.

Before the last few days I have never had problems such as this with my machine and now hopefully its resolved.

I will update if I have any further issues. Thank you for your assistance and sorry for not being more discriptive in my previous post...I was a little stressed. :D

Glad to hear you found the beast :D

For more info. on trojans - and how they can get in read this thread

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25239

I suggest you download, update and run the A2 scanner mentioned.

Also downloadSpybot and Ad-aware and immediately update their reference files (aka virus defs) - 'search for updates'. Run Spybot before Ad-aware and delete all they find.

Also download and run Cwshredder - download at the bottom of the page under 'Epilogue'

You should then have a clean m/c. Run these spyware/malware cleaners every couple of weeks or so.

Thank you so much Pete for you help and the links to the useful programs. I already use ad-aware, I am not sure how to update it...But I can find that out. The other programs I now have installed and they will be running every couple of weeks.

    Thanks again

    :D

If your Ad-aware is not Build 6.181 I suggest you download it from the link I gave - 'Check for Updates now' is on the main window - you need to be connected before updating.
