Hi - I have a computer where I get random C0000005 exception errors. These can occur in explorer.exe, spider.exe (it appears to randomly occur in any process that is running). Sometimes this will force the system to shut down to protect it's self.

My Actions so far have been to reinstall XP Pro. Several times.

This time as part of the reinstall I have reformatted all of the disks (NTFS). I have 2 x 148GB drives.
To be precise I have 1 x 30GB partition where I have put the OS which I reformatted.
This time round I left all the other bits as RAW (rather than spend time reformatting).
I have even removed the little diagnostic partition in case any viruses were in there.

This time I have not connected the computer to the Internet.

I have not even loaded any AV software.

The only CD that has touched the machine is the OEM Operating System disk.

This is XP Pro with SP2.

The machine is a Dell Precsion 670.

It had 4GB RAM. But currently only has 2GB. It has 4 x 1GB. But I've taken out 2GB problem persisted. Tried the other 2GB and problem persisted.

It has dual 3GHz Xeon Processors. I've tried it with 2nd turned off and problem persists.

After a rebuild it appears stable for a while (maybe 1/2 a day) and then problems start, hence why I was thinking virus.

So machine is a fresh rebuild. Not connected to internet. Only CD thats been in it is the OEM OS CD.

Not much that I can do except play games until the next C0000005 Exception Error.

    Anyone got any ideas?

    Diagnostics

I've also run the full set of Diagnostics.

    No errors.

    Not getting BSOD

    Hi Pete
No I never get the BSOD.
Just lots of Exception Errors C0000005 (often several per hour) and the occasional forced shut down (where it gives you 30secs to save before it cuts out).

Strangely tonight I can't make it go wrong.

I will paste in some dumps when I have them.

    Thanks
    Dave

This is not a normal Windows function unless I misunderstand you - it is reminiscent of the Sasser Worm (I think that was the one) yet you say this install has not been connected to the Internet. Is that the case?

    Shutdown

Correct PC has not been connected to any Network since reformat of drives and reinstall of XP Pro. This was done 25/05.

I've had some C0000005 Exceptions (fewer than usual) but no Shutdowns yet.
