    Hello All,
When using KFW for the 1st time, how does one know what to allow in & out of their computer?...Some incoming & outgoing traffic is difficult to determine what is necessary to function on the internet and which is adware or hackers or spyware!...All comments welcome.

    Regards,
    J. M. :)

By default I believe Kerio blocks everything incoming.

I say " I believe " because I have a Router and very little ( if anything ) uninvited incoming gets past it.

You as the User have to decide what get out.

    Hi BB,
For me, that's a little easier said than done...Don't know anything about a router yet...Is that freeware or do you have to buy it?

No it is not free and it is not software.

It is about a $70 HARDWARE investment.

It is a hardware Firewall not software. And a bit more reliable than software. At least on the incoming side. It has nothing to do with what goes out.

Kerio can be somewhat intimidating when you first start to use it - it is more 'intelligent' than Zone Alarm which tends to block most things withot asking.

The method I used when changing over to Kerio some months ago was to evaluate. in as much as I could, whether the request was 'reasonable' or expected. Best thing is to 'permit' or 'deny' - if in doubt, rather than make a rule straight off. If a 'deny' fouls up what you are doing then clearly a 'permit' and probably a rule based on that permit is in order.

A good line of approach is this - if a program on your m/c wants to contact the internet - and you recognise the program - 'permit'.
If something you don't recognise wants to come in - 'deny'

Even if you make a rule this can be turned off or deleted through Admin if it is inappropriate.

You may find some guidance here - and read the Kerio manual :D

Thanks Pete...That link has some good info, so I will bookmark it...Actually this thread is for a friends computer but I used to use KFW myself but it began to slow my computer down to a crawl so I had to disable it for now...Would ZA slow me down as well, or would it be worse than KFW...Seems like 64mb of memory in W98se would be enough to manage a firewall & AVG without the computer crawling...That was all I was running in the lower right corner of the desktop.

I used to use the free ZA, tried the Kerio [kept it] and noticed an immediate inprovement in my dial up connection speed, not the actual modem connection, but faster thoughput all around. This on 98Se with AVG.

Under the Miscellaneous tab, I disabled DNS resolving and Animate Traffic, left the Rules already in place.
