am looking for opinions on these power supplies or ones that you all like.

have an enermax eg465p-ve dual fans and one has stopped functioning after just over a year. am a little disappointed that an enermax didnt last longer.

am considering the following psu's. whats your opinion ??? they have 2 fans and i think one has 3. is 3 better ??? not sure if i trust enermax the one i have should have lasted longer.

one more question - if you go to geeks.com and look at there supply of psu's there prices are extremely low for no name brands. ex: 580w for around
    25.00.

so my question are these any good or is one going to just replace them faster by buying a low price no name device.

Do not succumb to the "power" of the dark side!

    A brief reply - no!

When dealing with power supplies, stick with proven brands like Antec. Alot of people swear by Enermax as well. Of course, that doesn't mean I have to stick to my own advice. My business rig uses this 420W PSU for $39 by Thermaltake.

And my gaming rig uses this 550W PSU by Rosewill for ~$60.

Extreme power users recommend OCZ Modstreams and Powerstreams but they're quite pricey. And if you have a ton of money to burn you can go for the best of the best: PC Power and Cooling. They're brutally expensive. They just came out with a 1 KW PSU!

Buying a cheap PSU is like buying a cheap transmission for your car. Not a good idea. I highly recommend not going with no-names.

    Folks

alot of different opinions out there on psu's and i do mostly agree that enermax and antec maybe the best but the enermax that i have lasted just a bit over a year. i dont consider that very good not when the warranty says
    3. emailed them and so far have heard nothing which again ticks me off if enermax is such a good quality company.

am going to try this device even though in the forum it says not to - http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=360904

i will watch the device and honestly if it last at least as long as the enermax then im a head of the game. like i said i am mad at enermax for not lasting long enough and for their non-response to my email.

    thanks guys.

Read my reply to your other post about the PSU. I think the second fan may only kick in when the temps of the PSU get too warm and is not required to run all the time. That is the way my older Raidmax is setup. I have had bad luck with Coolmax and the newer light weight Raidmax PSUs.

what type of things happened with the coolmax ??? im quite sure the exterior fan is dead. with the case temps as warm as it was and actually has been if that fan was working it wasnt doing the job. the case was pretty warm and the fan didnt kick in.

Every customer PC that I worked on which used a Coolmax PSU had to have the supply replaced because they expired faster than an eMachine PSU. That's bad! I even noticed that even though the wattage rating was considered high they actually did not put it out at a constant rate. It would be lucky if they performed at 50-60% of advertised. As to the temps for the second fan to kick in this regards the PSU temp not internal case temp. It is to help the PSU when under extreme loads.

i took your advise and cancelled my order for the coolmax psu. no sense spending 80.00 if its not going to last. fortunately, the order process hadnt gotten to far and cancel was an option.

now back to looking for another psu. like i said am nervous about enermax because this one sure didnt last as long as it should have. even emachines last longer than this enermax did.

    thanks.

hate to be a pest here. normally i dont have this much trouble making a computer decision but it is my main machine and i want the dang thing to last a bit.

so if that one was a good choice then this one should be even better more wattage and the same price - http://www.directron.com/eg495psfma20.html

I have read bad reviews about dealing with Directron at resellerratings. I would trust ZipZoomFly or NewEgg.

Here's the Enermax EG495P-VE-SFMA (24P) Noisetaker 485W Power Supply at ZipZoomFly.

I suppose I am getting in late on this one but I'll toss in my $0.02 :)

Have a look at this excellent tutorial on power supplies:

    http://www.silentpcreview.com/article28-page1.html

Consider the efficiency factor that is discussed and fan(s) noise.

For my money, Seasonic power supplies are at the top of my preference list.

i looked at the seasonic they are pricey even at newegg and they appear to only have 1 fan. i do like at least 2 fans.

sure are a lot of opinions out there on psu's. even antec and enermax are not without customer complaints so i guess no one is perfect. the enermax i am looking has a 3 year warranty which is pretty good.

    thanks.

Yes, they are pricey but you get what you pay for.

The trend of late is to go with one 120mm fan only instead of two 80mm fans.

A 120mm fan can move much more air at a given fan speed than 80mm fans.
The lower the fan speed, the lower the noise.

I use the Seasonic series 12 330 watt psu here and the fan hardly ever spins higher than 900 RPM, making it as quiet as a mouse :)

Also, consider the efficiency of any of the Seasonics, no use in wasting electrical power if we don't have to and the generation of excess heat.

    folks

have been reading review after review and it appears that it doesnt matter if enermax or antec or ocz they all seem to have people that hate them or have had bad results from them. one review said on the enermax eg565p that it fired 2 high end graphic cards that this person had in his system. question how can the psu fry the graphics ????????

i do like the ocz but boy they are pricey. i like the all cable being wrapped.

eg495p is more expensive than the eg565p - why would that be when the less expensive one has more wattage ??????

very confusing this psu stuff. driving me nuts trying to make the right decision.

one other thing what is this sli certification thing and why is it important ???????

SLI is when a gaming enthusiast uses TWO video cards to enhance the FPS (Frames Per Second) in the game they are playing.
SLI certified means that PSU can support TWO video cards operating at the same time.
