I have an old program called CARDFILE which I have used for years on many versions of Windows including XP. All of a sudden it will not open and I get this message:
"The WIN16 subsystem was unable to enter PROTECTED MODE. DOSX.EXE must be in your AUTOEXEC.NT and be present in your PATH "

    Any ideas?

    Hi, Welcome to the WindowsBBS!

    • Open your Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, then click System
    • On the System Properties window that opens, select the Advanced tab, and click the Environment Variables button. Under System variables select Path and click Edit
    • Make sure that the string below is at minimum available in Variable value:

      %SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem

There could be other path statements after the last entry, but this has to be there
    • When you added the above, save & reboot

If there is no Path variable at all, you have to add it (click New, and enter Path for the Variable name, and the Variable value string listed above).
