I recently had loads of problems with my computer freezing during a windows 98 SE install. After trying many options i discovered that my motherboard's processor cache memory was causing the problem.
Having disabled it in the BIOS she worked like a dream and continues to do so. The machine is only for word processing and is not for intensive memory usage, so will the disabled cache memory have any lasting long term effects or cause damage:confused:

Hi Benjy: I had a similar install problem with XP Home that refused to install and MS tech support had me disable cache (all) on MOBO. After install worked, without MS tech help, I went back to BIOS and re-enabled cache. Without knowing what I was doing, I just thought I should. The enabled cache has not caused any OS system operating problems and I think it runs faster.

But, a lot of geeks will tell you, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Maybe someone who knows what they are doing will reply, because MOBO settings are a mystery to me.

Hey mflyn: Yeah, well, I constantly try to tweak this machine and for sure, constantly cause more problems than I cure.

Mostly 'cause I don't know what I'm doing. But, it sure helps me find the "no nos" and I guess it contributes as much to my knowledge as it does to my frustrations. Whoever said " a little knowledge is a dangerous thing" sure knew what he was talking about!

One thing I know a lot about is re-installing OSes and programs that I ******* up by attempting to get a machine that runs perfectly. So far, no luck

Does that make me a Geek?
