I have an Dell, XP box - P4, 3.00 GHz, 512 MB RAM, SP3 and up to date, all drivers are current. I have killed all startup items in msconfig.

It measures about 1:15 minutes to complete the boot but it takes another 2 minutes for the MSE service to start, during which it slows the machine to a crawl.

Further, automatic updates and a svchost process continue to run unabated in the background indefinitely, sucking up a huge amount of memory, making any attempt to open anything an exercise in patience.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled MSE but the problem remains. Without MSE it starts fine.

The only other security program on the machine is MBAM. I uninstalled it but it didn't make much of a difference.

I have attached a mini dump of the svchost process.

    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

Hi cspgsl. Not having enough physical RAM can cause the symptoms you are describing. 512 MB is the bare minimum amount for Windows XP. I would recommend at least having 1 GB of RAM to be able to run anything smoothly.

Having to little RAM also explains why when MSE starts up, it slows down your computer a considerable amount because the process uses up a good amount of RAM. The way to resolve this issue is for you to buy more RAM for your system. Your current amount is just not enough to run all the functions of Windows XP and MSE at the same time.

I would tend do agree with you however, I have had a number of XP installs that work of 512.
I shall double it, see what happens and report back

doubled the memory which made a slight improvement. Windows Update seems to be the culprit here.
One cannot disable it on start up can one?

You can disable it permanently by modifying the Registry .....

How to turn off the Windows Update feature in Windows XP

It would be worth doing this - can always revert, to confirm your suspicions.

Alternatively hold down the Shift key during boot - this prevents anything in the Start Up folder from loading - WU may well not be listed there.

You can reset Windows Update by following the instructions here ....

How do I reset Windows Update components?

Alternatively WinPatrol enables you to set a delayed startup for specific programs.

    Thanks for the update. :)

If you have Windows Update disabled on your machine make sure you check for updates manually using the Windows Update website so the computer doesn't become vulnerable to new security threats.
